PageRank™

PageRank™ (PR) is a number from 0 to 10 that represents how important a page is on the web. A PR of 0 is a low or bad ranking while 10 is a high or good ranking. Google developed the concept to improve search results.

How it Works

The premise is that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a favorable vote for the receiving page. The more links to a page, the more important that page must be. But the key element of PageRank is this: the more important a page is, the stronger the vote it casts for a receiving page. The importance of each vote (or link to a page) is determined when a page's PR is calculataed. This was Google's way of measuring not only quantity of links, but also quality of links. The result is better search results. This isn't the only method that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.
