A domain name is the address of a website like this: www.mysite.com. A domain is like the mailing address for the location of a residence. If you have the address of a residence, you know how to get to the location; if you have the domain name, you know how to get to the website. These are the different parts of a domain name:
| com | — | this is the Top Level Domain (TLD) | |
| mysite | — | this is the second level domain or subdomain of .com; this is often loosely referred to as the domain. | |
| www | — | this is the subdomain of mysite; if set up correctly, it is not necessary to have the www to get to the website. |
There are different kinds of TLDs:
You can find the authoritative list of current TLDs at the IANA website.
