When a domain is registered, the registrar records the date of registration and the date when the registration will expire. This is stored in the WHOIS record and available for public view.
Creation Date
The date that the domain was registered.
Expiration Date
The date the domain will expire. If not renewed, the domain would be available for anyone to acquire the domain.
